Major League Soccer
Just wondering what the general opinion of MLS in mainstream North America is Smile

I'm sure you've all seen the buzz about David Beckham, so has it converted you to a soccer fan? Coming from England I've been bred on a diet of soccer all my life and, in my opinion, is quite simply the greatest sport in the world. I understand in America the majority don't feel the same though, why is this?

(ESPN2 show soccer quite a bit, including 2 MLS matches tonight and Champion's League)

Being that I am a Spaniard that grew up in the U.S. I have to admit that soccer is, or was my favourite sport to play as a kid. I pretty much terrible at most other sports but in soccer...I was real good and usually got away with kicking the soccer ball at some bully's face/head/back Toungue

RE: Major League Soccer
MANY people here play soccer as kids, and the phrase "Soccer Mom" has entered the vernacular. Still, most people lose interest as they get older and not many people follow professional soccer.

That can and probably already is changing due to the increasing Hispanic population here.

I like soccer. My friend is going to be a goalkeeper at Corbin Baptist College, and I watched some of his high school games. I still prefer fĂștbol norteamericano, though. Other friend was varsity QB, point guard and pitcher this year. Toungue

RE: Major League Soccer
With the laughable standard of the MLS, it's little surprise football isn't so widely followed over there. Nor will a lasting effect be created by a few over the hill professionals seeking a last pay-day (Beckham, Denilson etc.). Only once decent European players near their prime enter the league can it take off as more than a circus.

I would agree with TOSO though, eventually we'll get a large enough Mexican population that soccer will become popular in the U.S. Probably MLS's quality will improve then... until then it's never really on TV and the media ignores it so I don't really follow it.

No, not a big soccer fan. The Beckhan news did not get me anymore interested. Plus, I don't have any of the channels that feature MLS games.

I'm sorry but this is simply not true in so many ways...

The way MLS is heading, it wants to be the force of North and South America rather than trying to become or overtake Europe. Most of the clubs are bringing in young Argentinian and Colombian players, such as Juan Toja, who would not have joined MLS 5 years ago. The quality of play is rapidly increasing, and even though I support a Premier League club, I still find an average MLS game more exciting than an EPL game.

This explains the current status of soccer in America quite nicely.
