Battle website
Hey guys,

I've been a veteran of Neopets for a long time and own my own popular fan site for Neopets. Not only am I a veteran of Neopets, I'm also a fan of battling. Although I dont have my own 100 million battledome set, love battling - it's the thrill.

I'm an experienced programmer and can program anything you guys want. I have this idea, perhaps to create a virtual pet site that's entirely dedicated to battling (like Neopets except focused on battling)? I've taken a look at other battle sites such as pokemoncrater.com (basically it's an online version of pokemon, relatively fun if you like pokemon and stuff) and it is surprisingly fun. Perhaps I could make a battling website that is a cross between Neopets and Pokemon.

The reason why I'm telling you guys this is because I want to ask for your opinions. What are some things you'd like to see in a new battle web site?

RE: Battle website
I'm not sure what the Mods are going to think about this thread when they see it, but...

... somehow I get the feeling that PokeMon Crater (if it's the site I'm thinking of, and I wasn't entirely familiar with it to begin with, so I could easily enough be wrong) was running off of near-identical code to the PokeMon games (we have all the stats and information to replicate the battle system, in any case). Add in the copy-righted pictures, and I really wouldn't see it as a good idea.

While it would be cool to have even a test battle dome, I get the feeling TNT wouldn't feel that way. Running something "similar but different" would be cool, but that would end up being its own creation. One of the other things it's not just the Battle Dome that makes us stick with Neo: it's everything else that goes with it. Community, the hours wasted invested, and the memories. Good luck if you do end up making something, but you'll understand that even if it did catch my interest enough to go there, I still wouldn't be placing my money on it being successful.

As for things I'd like to see: a functioning battle system that's not horribly broken (easily abused) in some manner or another. (And even with Neo's BD, there are several points that I think would be better managed differently.)

RE: Battle website
I don't have any problems with this thread.

The only thing I may have a problem with what you're doing in general is that you're using a similar idea to TNT's, or basing off of it at least. I don't know if you're planning on a re-creation of their system, or if you're making up your own, but it would be a lot better, both personally and ethically to make up something on your own.

RE: Battle website
Its a cool idea but you have to realize that there is so much more behind it then battling. How do people get weapons? with currency. How do people get currency? How will it be fair. How will your economy work and as you start to develope your ideas you will notice that it isn't just a battle website anymore but much more.

RE: Battle website
I applaud you for wanting to start something out like that. It's a big task, and no matter what others may say, you never know if you don't give it a try. Smile

But I think we would be able to give a better opinion to your idea if you have a concrete plan as to what it is all about. From your description, it's not speaking to us as "something unique". There are many alternative pet sites and online gaming sites out there. Why not look into researching into what makes them sell, and then evolve an idea with your findings, with and answer to this question: "What does it have that sets it apart from Pokemon and Neopets?"

As a veteran of Neopets, you should understand personally why you keep coming back to this game. But it's not enough to just look into what you like. An online games popularity would depend on the activeness of it's community and participants. Perhaps you can ask someone who can give you a business eye into things? Even if you are not intending to make money out of what you are about to create, a person like that can help to identify something that can make your site unique enough to visit.

Good luck! Smile

RE: Battle website
Hi guys

Thanks for all of your comments. To be honest with you guys, the battle system and overall game that I'm envisioning will not have any resemblance to Neopets whatsoever. So you dont have to worry about me copying Neopets Toungue

Anyway, really I was just wondering if you guys had any unique ideas that you'd like to see incorporated into a battle dome (from a Neopets perspective).

Still in the planning stages, so don't eat me alive - this is just a brainstorming session.

RE: Battle website
I have to admit, it's pretty hard to incorporate anything more unique to the battling system Neo has, but there is one thing I would love to happen...

Team Battles

Perhaps a tag team match up, with maybe other players in the site? Or even with two of the pets you own? That would certainly be interesting, heh. Wink

RE: Battle website
I'd prefer to see every stat point count, rather than have Boosts, and I'd also like to see longer battles (though I may be one of the few people that dislikes Neo's and PokeMon's tendency for short furious battles). The other decision you'd need to make very early on is whether both Pets should attack at once (Neo) or attack separately (PokeMon and most RPGs in general). I'd highly recommend against running a speed system that allows consecutive attacks, as that tends to break games.

Beyond that, most of the ideas I have are being saved for a personal project, Wink.

RE: Battle website
Great ideas! Love it! Perhaps there could be some way to make battles more strategic in a sense rather than "SHOW ME YER BEzT WePOnZZ AND TRI TO CILL ME!!!11/`/11/!~1SHIFTCTRL!!"

Any other idears? :-\'\'

I actually like games with consecutive attacks. It works well in Neoquest II, and it gives more of an incentive to train Speed.

RE: Battle website
This is a big project you are brainstorming Toungue In my previous post i say that there is a lot more behind this. I don't mean to discourage you. I mean to make you realize the work behind this =P

first off you need to know which kind of stats you will have.
Then what all these stats do.
How do you increase them?

Strength generally makes you hit harder
Defence makes you block more
Speed makes you attack quicker

How will levels work? Will you reach a level and then get a stat increase (diablo style) or will you need to train your level?

Will you have experience? If so will it be there to increase the level or just there for bragging rights. To show how much experience you have. It would be a fun thing to experient with. How much experience someone has changes their rank in society maybe?

I won't go into weapons just yet. ill let you think about what i said Toungue
