Side account confusion

I started getting pets from the pound and zapping them. Now I have a couple I want to keep but too many pets ruins the training regime for the BD pet as the random events seem to spread it evenly through the pets.
I know I can have a main and 4 side accounts all of which can be to a single email address.
So, if I create a new account, activate it, still have no pets in it, I can't use it for 2 months before I can disown/adopt to this account if they are 'special'?
I find a lot of mention of side accounts, how to transfer successfully but nothing specific on setting up side accounts.

Anyone got a link for dummies so I don't get frozen accounts?
