Most people make a huge mistake of thinking the lab will do all the training for you. Well, I don't really think that. It does help out with training, but don't think it'll do it all for you. This article will try to teach you how to use the lab ray wisely without messing up your pet.
FIRST - GETTING YOUR PET TO A CERTAIN LEVEL. The lab can make your level go down to 1, which isn't good when you're training with codestones and the lab. I have heard rumors that you have to get your pet to level 25, 30, or even 50. I believe it's level 20. It kind of varies. Nobody knows for sure... but getting your pet to level 20 drastically reduces the risk of your pet going down to level 1. First, get your pet up to level 20 and train your stats in proportion to level 20. This is the first step in using the lab wisely. . .to make sure your pet doesn't loose all its levels.
MY DEFINITION OF "PROPORTION!" When I use the word proportion, I mean that your pets' stats must be closely together. That means, you don't have level 50 and have 4874 HP. I generally follow the codestone/dubloon training rule: no stat can go over 2 times your level. This excludes the agility and intelligence stat.
SECOND - USING THE LAB. After you get your pet to level 20, and train your stats in proportion to level 20, you're ready to use the lab (or buy all the lab pieces, if you haven't already). You can start zapping your pet, however, KEEP YOUR STATS IN PROPORTION. This is *THE* wisest way to use the lab!
FOLLOW THIS BASIC CONCEPT. . .using the lab isn't rocket science. Use the lab to raise your stats (once you train with codestones/dubloons to level 20) and codestones to keep your stats in proportion. THAT is the KEY. I know a person that has over 2000 HP, yet this person only has the 300 defense boost.
KEEP IN MIND. . .the lab is very, um, screwy? It can seriously damage your pets' stats. You ALWAYS want to be CONSTANTLY monitoring your stats. If the lab raises 3 strength, you may want to raise your level so it keeps your pets' stats in proportion. DON'T USE THE LAB EVERY DAY. . .if your pets' stats are getting out of hand. Take a few days to earn some NP to get codestones to get your pet back to normal. Don't feel obligated to use the lab every day. It WILL pay itself off.
Like I said, using the lab isn't rocket science. Keep your stats in proportion (using my definition of proportion). Monitor your stats daily. Don't use the lab every day. Use the lab to raise stats, but codestones to keep the stats in proportion. Sorry if I have been a bit repetitive in this article, but I just want to grind this facts into your head. Good luck with the lab and use it wisely!
NOTE : Do NOT waste your NP on codestones to train the stat 'Agility' in proportion to your level. Agility does NOT to ANYTHING in the battledome, and Neopets is NOT planning on making the 'Agility' stat have an effect any time soon. Also, the stat 'Intelligence' has no effect. You can raise this stat by reading books, but keep in mind, it has NO effect in the battledome, so I wouldn't go wasting your NP on that (unless you HAVE NP to waste :-P). Have fun!

I had an article similar to this on the iDB a couple years ago, but it got kind of outdated and got wiped
But basically, yeah, lab is great, you just need to keep your stats in check with other training methods...
