I've used a similar method - basically training in conjunction with labbing, and using training to compensate for what the lab isn't doing a good job on - so far it's worked well. I've had multiple species and paint changes - so I'd STRONGLY advise not to get too attached to something specific while labbing - I usually do a species and/or paint for something special, like wartime, and resume labbing after.
The BIG downside is if you rely on a species-specific freezer or healer, you HAVE to group your challengers or it gets un-economical FAST. Suggestion? If you want to use one of the economic species specific healers (elephante, kacheek, gelert), lab until you're ready to go to war or do a block of challengers. Until then, keep an eye out for cheap morphs/trans potions and hoard them. Then you'll have your species changer all ready for when you need it! I've probably had about 50 percent of my stats from lab, 35 percent from training, and 15 percent from stat increasers, faerie quests, and k-quests etc. (Not including intelligence.) So I'd definitely say the lab is well worth the cost.

My pet has 562 HP's but is only LEVEL 1..the most he has gotten is Level 3, I think. Now that I am Battledoming again (learning to do it properly) I just want the Lab to give me a Cool Pet, then I will stop using the Ray
At the moment RAZABLAYDE is a red Lenny, LOL, so don't want to keep him like that. I got the Labray after I had my 3 other pets and wouldn't use it on them for sentimental reasons, so once the ray has done it's thing on the Lenny, I will not be using it again. I have noticed for a few weeks now, I'm losing stats and Levels, no change to hit points or pet species. Very frustrating
