anybody knows is the defence stats does anything or help in any way in a battle?

The defensive stats have various boosts, just as the strength stats do, and they help in blocking your opponent's attack, as long as you are using a weapon that has defensive ability against that stat (for example a Leaf Shield will defend against water, earth and physical attack, with the amount of defense being determined by both the amount of icons the weapon defends multpilied by the appropriate defensive boost. So yes, defensive stats ARE helpful.
