Im pretty sure its actually the opposite. I think there was an editorial that debunked this. This rumor has been going around for years now, even before they did database purges, which means that the items would have always been on an account, and no items would have ever been rereleased to test this. I could be completly wrong about this though, but I don't want to go digging for the editorial right now.
But if I am wrong, the day that v_teams account gets purged will be a fun day since it is rumored to have several of each pea. Although it won't do anything the help redistribute all of the FSlings that went down with the account.

Nope. They just sit there forever. The reasons behind this is that if the account is ever unfrozen, the owner would be quite distraught to see all their items gone!
Also, there is a rumour floating around that if an account is frozen with an item from the Smuggler's Cove, a replacement item will appear in the cove waiting to be purchased. This is NOT true. Just wanted to get that out there. 
That covers frozen accounts, not purged ones, but I'd imagine it's the same idea.

Poof! Gone. Never to be seen again. They aren't recycled, they are simply deleted, lost to the great abyss for all eternity. *sniffle* Also, despite rumour, Smuggler's Cove items will not reappear in the cove if they are discarded.
the first one isn't evidance for the acount purges not replacing it into the cove, but the 2nd one does. I wonder how much of a spam spread it would take to get everybody who gave up on neopets to log in and donate all the items they don't use, then self freeze

thats what counts item we can buy then sell for np to get better ones
