Nope that's really how it works.

Yes. It really works like that.
Assuming the defenders defense boost == the attackers str boost and there are no other confounding factors.
I'm going to assume that both battlers are 13 Str and Def (*1 multiplier) in the following examples, just to make the math easier:
If the attacker berserks (*1.5) with 5 fire icons, and the defender cautious attacks (*1.0) with a weapon which blocks 5 fire icons :
The attacker deals 5 * 1.5 * 1.0 *1 = 7.5 damage and the defender blocks 5 * 1.0 * 1 =5, for a total of 2.5 damage through
Next case:
If the attacker cautious attacks with 5 fire icons, and the defender berserks with a weapons that blocks 5 fir icons:
Then the attacker deals 5 * 1.0 *1.5 *1 = 7.5 damage and the defender blocks 5 * 1.5 * 1 = 7.5, for a total of zero damage through.
Now
If both battlers berserk :
Then the attack deals 5 * 1.5 * 1.5 * 1= 11.25 damage and the defender blocks 5 * 1.5 * 1 = 7.5, for a total of 3.75 damage through.
