I've just started spending money on Battledome items, so I am pretty much broke at this point

STR 35
DEF 33
HP 33

I currently have these items on him.

Sand Snowball x 3
Scarab Ring
Blue Scorchstone
Downsize!
Leaf Shield
Earth Faerie Slingshot

I haven't done much battling, but I plan to start moving my way through the Defender of Neopia stuff.

Um, train DEF to 35.

Get another constant, like Battle Ready Pencil Box as a 7iconer.

But without an exact amount of budget (on hand, income/day), I can't really say much.

I'd recommend an Unstable Slime for the constant, with a nicer icon variety. A second Scarab Ring may be of use too, seeing that you trained defence. The Sand Snowballs may be replaced with your 3rd constant, maybe a Mystical White Cloak for mopping up annoying icons, and a Shooting Star Muffin for slightly more power in DoN missions, but not as a once-per-battle measure.

Of all those, only the Cloak is above 10K, so they should be affordable within a day or 2. Anything better, we need to know your income for that.

1-player sets are easy -- you pretty much just want weapons that do as many icons as possible for as cheap as possible. "Good" icon types are nice, but not as important as in 2-player. Here are some decent buyable main attackers:

Enchanted Wooden Bow
Tyrannian Lupe Tooth
Stone Club
Ice Club

A few other decent one-use bombs are Fire Muffin, Chocolate Chip Battle Biscuit and Shooting Star Muffin. You should also grab some kind of freezer, even if it's just a cheap Snowglobe Staff. Freezing is extremely useful in DoN, where you will mostly be fighting opponents much stronger than yourself -- you need every advantage you can get.

I'm going to be saving up for an Ice Club or even save up past that for a Golden Compass. The that leaves one slot for a bomb. Yay! Thanks everyone!

EDIT: Well...hmm. I haven't taken into account what stuff in my battleset is permanent and which weapons I can sell once I get better stuff.

Golden Compass (an excellent weapon) can replace the slingshot, and you can eventually replace the slime with another 9 or 10-iconer. Your constants are okay for now, though. Again, you really should get a freezer in there -- if you don't like the Snowglobe Staff, Black Frost Cannon is a little better, albeit a lot more expensive. A free shot against a frozen opponent is pretty much a necessity in DoN, though.
