For every world in Neopia, a small number of games are selected, supposedly by popularity, as the WC games for the day.
A player pays 100 np to enter a WC for the hour. Once entered, he can send in as many scores as he wishes, though it must be noted that exceedingly low scores will not be admitted, as will scores that surpass the review limit. The scores are randomly matched against other scores sent in during the hour, and your tally changes as a result of your number of wins (+1), losses (-1) and draws (0). And when I say random, I really mean random, a VRII WC may be filled with nothing but <500 scores up till you send yours, only for your 1500 to be matched with a 1530...
Depending on the number of players with score processed in that particular WC, the number of prize slots differs. In order for WC pieces to be awarded for the hour, there must be a minimum of 5 players in it, in which case there would be two prize slots. To win a piece, your tally must not be negative.
Prizes are awarded in three categories, tally, highest score for the hour, and score total. Tally is self-explanatory, the higher your win-loss total, the higher your position. Players with identical tallies are separated first by their total number of games played (hence 1 player with 2-1 will be above one with 1-0) followed by their highest score for the hour. Highest score for the hour is precisely that, the highest score you sent in for that WC. Score total is the sum of all the processed scores.
You can only win one piece per WC, even if you occupy prize slots in all three categories, in the order of tally/score total/hourly HS. However, even if you win a piece for tally and occupy a prize slot for hourly HS, it doesn't mean that your prize slot in hourly HS is given to the next best player outside of the available prize slots. I.e. if I occupy the first slot in both tally and hourly HS in a WC with 3 prize slots, I win a piece for tally, but the player occupying fourth position in hourly HS will not win a piece despite my not being able to win one in that category. Methinks my explanation here is somewhat lacking...
Rest of you guys who frequent WCs, feel free to fill in any gaps I left out. shadownight, do clarify if anything is unclear.

http://neopets.com/challenges/world_index.phtml
each world has a few games selected, atleast two on popularity that might change each day (not likely) and a randomly selected one that changes more often.
I've got to remember to play more often, I don't have all my maps complete yet
