I don't really get the point of malls. But I think the best spots in malls are the faeries/codestone/dubloons. They're easy to snipe, and easy to put just so that you get profit. That's my comment.
I'd highly recommend against commenting on one of the major NP earning methods, especially when you don't have a knowledge about it. Malling works because newbies end up in the Main Marketplace (and possibly end up in the Island Marketplace). Petpets is accepted as the highest profit since cute, adorable creatures are in high-demand among the newbie population.
Profit is certainly based off of the prices you buy things, but any Shop in a mall is still profitable if ran properly.
Faeries, Codestones, and Dubloons are profitable for SW-snipers, but I'm not sure that they'd do so well in malls since they require the newbie to either be stupid (dubloons are shiny) or to understand what they're used for (in which case it's surprising that they don't know how to use the Shop Wizard). Apparently they do, though, since people do take that spot (it's certainly the easiest to manage).
Dubloons don't sell well actually. I have them.
My spot is Faeries/Magic/Codestones/Dubloons/Paintbrushes
My best sellers are the faeries.. one of the best spots to have period. And a surprise one- fire mote. I put the fire mote as my shops special- "get it before it runs out thing". Paintbrushes also make a lot, but only certain ones sell well. I stick to those- glass paint brush at 99k, stone paint brush at 89k (doesn't sell as often), plushie petpet pb's (buy at 9k sell at 19k) and snow petpet pb's (buy at 18k sell at 29k). I sell a pretty good amount of codestones as well, but they're not the best spot to have
How has everyone been doing post-makeover? My sales have been VERY bad.. They look decent over the weekends, but the weekdays are quite pitiful..
I'm hoping to eventually get a main marketplace mall back (first one got iced)... But from what I am hearing from others and now Kage, I might consider not doing so
I do furniture/garden/paintbrushes for my mall.
It's a fantastic site to say the least.
I've done toy/plushie/avatar before and that was just horrible.
I mean you think its a quest spot you'll be busy. But for the most part, people come in just for their quest item and that's it. With furn/garden people are coming in to furnish their whole neohome so they spend lots more.
I've made a ton more since switching. Sure costs more to stock but *well* worth it.
As for sales, during the week sure I slumped but no less than normal. This weekend though was really good and we don't do NB ads. Shrugs. We'll see after statistics have a chance to work.
I used to sorta mall (before I got frozen), and I had Cards & Clothes (ie: Light/Fire Faerie quest items), and I did rather decent. I was working my way up to main market size, but got frozen, but was like halfway there I think. I kinda forget. But I didn't even do half-bad because the mall owner was cool and had a size 1000 shop and had several other people in the main marketplace.
However, all this was before the malling boom. I'd probably fail to turn a profit in today's neo-economy.
I was furni/garden.. it's a pretty nice spot to have. Most people don't really think about it but I liked it when I had it. I have this powerhouse spot right now though, so I'm sticking to it lol.
I'm not doing as great with the change though. We don't run any ads which might be part of it.

wow glass and stone pb's for you too? i just went back and reread your post. i wonder if it's just because they're at the very beginning stock wise. i've sold at least 50 glass in two months and about 40 stone in the same time period.
and the whole time i'm thinking its like those pb's don't even work...haha.
as for my spot...well i'll prolly stick to furn and garden. i like having a lot of different things stocked which is one reason why i liked toy so much. but furn/garden is even moreso just a ton more profit.

Yeah... Glass pb's deflated for some reason recently too. So even more profit on them lol. What do you sell your pb's at?
I had toy... I had so many things stocked and only a few different items sold so I wasn't a fan of it.. It was okay np but when I finally changed spots I couldn't get rid of the toys so I still have over 1000 plushies in my sdb today like 2 years later lol
