Well..
Species Abilities are the way to pull some nice icons (depending on the pet) without using power (leave them for sink/burrow, etc) and without also increasing your opponente damage output (fierce attack, berzeker and that stuff makes not only help you to make more icons..also helps your opponent) and defending abilities (defend) are better or worse depending on your strategy..if you are in favor of cutting your attack so your opponent doesn't make so much damage..use defend..but if you just wan't to take advantage without cutting your own attack & without powering-up your opponent..species abilities are the best election
(I'm sorry if i am not clear) Just mail me and ill try to explain better

Defend and offensive species abilities both have their place in a solid battledome strategy. The trick is to learn the right time to use them, which varies a little depending on your opponent. For example, I like to use the 6 icon species abilities to give me some extra punch when my opponent heals to allow more icons and damage to get through his or her defenses. I like to use defend to limit the damage I'll take near the end of a close fight.
Betaboy2,
I recommend you organize some battles amongst your members to teach them the tactics you want them to follow. Defend can definitely help in some situations.

Personally I think species abilities are worth it on the high level battling.. at low level battling I personally find then not very useful. This is my personal opinion though.

Ok, slow down everyone. Species Abilities are *not* always worth it. Yes, if you were fighting someone and you both had infinity hitpoints, Species Abilities would, on average, do more, but there are some other cases we must consider.
Lets assume your strength multplier is * 2 and you are attacking with two ten icon weapons.
Your base damage is 40. Thus, if the other guy has 55 hit points left, you have 160 hit points, and the other guy is doing 100 damage per round, you want to berserk. Yes, he will do 150 hit points but you survive and kill him. Berserking, IIRC, does 150% damage. In this case, that will be 60 damage and kill him. If you use your SA, you will do 52 damage and die. Yes, the numbers are exact here but there are many cases in which you need to berserk so that you kill the other guy in one fewer round.
The other case, as mentioned by someone else, is when you need to defend to stay alive longer. If you know he has the firepower to kill you in one shot unless you defend, then you should defend and see what magic you can work.
So, while in the general case, Species Abilities are very much worth it. But if you are in a case where you can kill the other guy by berserkering, or the other guy can kill you if you do not defend, then those situtations call for something else.
