from what I remember, it worked if I entered the WC competition even after the window was already open as long as I clicked on the link 'play and send score' before I sent my score
but I still had to close/reopen the window if it was more than 3 scores for the day (although now I never send more than 3, so it's not an issue for me)

It works as long as the score you send is one of your three for the day. I often play a game of Faerie Bubbles or Volcano Run before entering the WC, then enter and send it with no problems. If you've already sent three scores that day, though, it won't work.
