hey people, just a question... i noticed that my friend's pet (120+ str, 50+ def, ~200hp) has stats way higher than me (35str, 34def, 49hp), yet he's using the same few 9-iconers as me. so i'd just like to know... how do you know when your weapons make you a noobinator, and when your weapons need upgrading?
thanks!
It's just something that's blatantly obvious. A noobinator-type pet would typically be defined as around a 35 boost pet or lower or a pet with extremely low HP that has an expensive set. The expensiveness of the set is a subjective thing. However, to me, if they have some sort of method to constantly heal (ECA, RoDN, etc) along with strong weapons (around the SoS level and higher), that makes them a noobinator.

The opposite of a noobinator would be someone who trains his/her pet and doesn't use it all on weapons. Most people typically split their total budget between training, weapons, and whatever else. If one spends all of it on weapons, that would put them towards the noobinator level. A good neopet trainer (I completely stole that term from pokemon XD) would split between training and weapons. Only lame people invest most their NP into weapons and use that to battle those clearly in a different class due to economic reasons.

As for your friend, I'd say he's due for an upgrade. It's hard to say when it's a good time to upgrade usually, but when you battle others in quickfight or something and most of them have better weapons than yours, it's usually a good sign. Also, the cost of 9 icon weapons nowadays is pretty much NOTHING. I remember a couple years ago, I was near your friend's pet's range (125 str/def boost, 150 HP) and I had 11 iconers, H4k, and HP. I thought of myself to be a bit below par, since many people I battled around that level had SoS and the like.

Cliffs:
  • A noobinator would be one that invests most/all of his/her NP into weapons instead of training.
  • They typically have a healer for every turn.
  • Noobinators that battle those that are clearly inferior to them = lame.
  • The best way to find if your weapons need upgrading are by battling others and seeing where their sets are at. (Well, unless you battle one-player only XD)
If you are called a noobinator on a constant basis, I'd say that would be a pretty good indicator.
90% of neopia is Overequipped and Undertrained.

Seriously. For the price of a Sword of Skardsen, you can buy enough codestones to train a pet up to the 300 Str boost. And an Ice Club with a 300 boost deals MORE damage than a SOS with anything less than a 200 Boost.

Yeah, in 2 player, you'll suffer because people don't want to fight pets with higher stats and weapons are invisible until the fight has begun, but you know what, WAR PRIZES and DoN Trophies are not awarded for 2player battles.

I would say I need a upgrade prity badly but the str boosts do make up for lack of weapions quiet a bit. I think I have reached a point that upgrading to 300 boost is gonna cost me more than new weapions.
If you can consistently beat almost everyone at your level, your next step is to upgrade your stats. If you can consistenly beat most of the people at your level, you could still upgrade your weapons or you could upgrade your stats. And if you're below that then upgrade your weapons....

Or: If your weapons cost bout the same as others in your stat range, then you're ok.

And graphitesmoothie is right, most noobinators have weapons that can heal themselves every turn. And I'd just like to add that thier set is usually way blown out of proportion. Like 10 times what other people are spending on their weapons at that level.

And for one players there is no time when you "have" to upgrade weapons or train. But like the other guys mentioned, stats pay off better than weapons damage wise
