Cry: something on my computer shorted, I'm not able to figger it out myself, nor are any of my more tech-savvy friends available until next weekend. So if TNT sticks to the pattern for this plot so far. I'll be having to try to max out the next opponent on my girlfriend's P3 running at a blazing 448 Mhz (with loads of spyware slowing it evven further) That's going to be fun.

Just take your GF's computer and change thing components in and out until one step works and not the next. Like swap the ram out and then the HDD and then the PSU until you figure out what broke. You may have a problem with different connections, though...
Does it just not start up? Does it start up slightly and then not work the rest of the way? Have you tried another OS? Does it beep when you start it up? What is the beep sequence/what type of computer?

I appreciate the intent here, but that's likely going to be far less practical than just having a friend who does such things professionally look at it over the weekend.

My hunch is that it's an issue with the cpu or a connection on the motherboard. All the fans turn on, but the computer no longer starts up at all, no beeps or anything. It turned off mysteriously - no blue screen of death or anything. Then I was able to restart it and run for a couple minutes, then it turned off again. I was able to boot one more time and only for a couple seconds and then it won't actually restart.
I've played with disconnecting non-essential hardware, to no avail. But I'm not about to take my girlfriend's computer apart, as she needs to use it (obsolete as it is) pretty regularly and WinXP starts thinking it's pirated if you change more than three pieces of hardware on your motherboard.
