you suggest to use these defensive weapons against him:
Winged Scarab
Leaf Shield
the leaf shield is ok (Virtupets X-514 Super Shield is another useful alternative here - more expensive though and maybe a bit weaker) but using the winged scarab is not a good choice.
leaf shield takes already 3 physical and chances are low that esophagor deals more then 3 icons physical (max=5 not talking about stance) while chances are good that it deals at least 1 icon physical every single turn?causing the winged scarab to deal lots of damage itself.
A Sacrab Ring would do better here.
it has twice the offence (it blocks fire instead air so the overall defence should stay the same) while it blocks 3 physical itself without damaging you - and it is about 200 times cheaper then the winged scarab.
