I always assumed that defense boosts didn't really matter because only the unblocked icons would count against the damage and that all blocked icons would be disregraded. (example: If someone used a ramtors spellbook against me and i used a rotl, it would be the same as if a five-light-icon weapon attacked me). How am I wrong on this? thanks for any help and clarification

Oh man. I've been reading up on defence a lot lately, and it still confuses me. But it works like strength boosts do; it's based on your boost's
damage multiplier. An example: let's say you have the 125 boost (strength and defence) and your opponent has the 200 boost (also strength and defence). Let's say, for simplicity's sake, they hit you with one
Essence of Esophagor, for a total of 5 earth and 5 water icons, and you defend with just a
Leaf Shield (blocks 5 earth and 5 water icons). You both use cautious attack. They will do this much damage:
10 icons x 4.5 (200 strength boost's damage multiplier) x 1 (cautious) = 45
Your leaf shield blocks 5 earth and 5 water -- great, right? Sort of. You only have the 125 defence boost. So you could block:
10 icons x 3.0 (125 defence boost's damage multiplier) x 1 (cautious) = 30
So you block a bunch of the EoE, but 15 damage still gets through to you.
(The above only relates to non-percentage defence -- basically, weapons that defend a certain
number of icons rather than a
percentage of icons.
Downsize! is an example of the other type of defence weapon -- it blocks 50% of each icon type, no matter what your defence boost.)
Someone correct me if I screwed something up, please. I'm still learning about defence.

Here's what I'm wondering. When you defend, does it block daage per icon or total? For example, if I had a defensive weapon that blocked 6 fire icons (whether one exists or not is irrelevant) and an opponent did 4 icons of fire damage, but my defense boost was 3 and his strength boost was 5 (again it is irrelevant if that exists or not), does that mean I would block 18 damage and 2 would get through, or would I block one icon for each of his icons, therefore not using two of my defensive icons and allowing 8 damage through, 2 for each icon? If that was a little hard to understand, I apologize.

let me recap for your example :
Your def multiplier = 3, opp str multiplier = 5
Shown icon (assume no fractional):
you : 6x

(shown icon not standard icon) opp : 4x
with above data available it still not enough to conclude damage you block/receive.
Quote:How to calculate blocked damage from shown defence icon:
Blocked damage = actual shown defence icon * first person who click go button's strength boost multiplier * your stance multiplier
so assuming your opponent click go button first, both stance = cautious, you will block 20 damage and receive 0 damage.
assuming you click go button first and both stance = cautious, you will block 6 * your str multiplier
However, if the 6

is standard defence (defence value of the weapon), then you'll receive 2 damage and block 18 damage (assuming both stance=cautious).

The 6 blocked was standard icon. That answered my question. Thanks!
