I disagree. you'll need a research lab ASAP so that you can get small cargo ships, in my books, that's what you need ASAP. then after that large cargo ships. They are great/the only wat to raid for resources.

yes, it does matter, join universe 3.....only if you want to join the alliance though...otherwise, choose the largest number because it will have the least amount of competition...but that also would give you the least amount of people to raid....so just join universe 3

cargo ships carry resources on them. They also havea few weak guns for terrorizing
defenseless planets...so if you have inactive defenseless planets around yours, you can raid them with your cargo ships andd steal resources...1 small cargo can carry 5k and if you send it on an attack, it takes about 3-4 hours (assuming no engine upgrades). So an extra 5k per small cargo each 4 hours, doesn't hurt!
Large cargo are better and cheaper imo since they can carry 25k but onyl cost 3 times more.
