Ok, I have just reached level 30 and I am 90% sure that I am going to be a Spearman. I was wondering though, what is better? Spears, or polearms? And also, is the spearman a recommended second job? I know that all jobs have there own ups and downs but I am sure that some have more ups than downs....hopefully spearman is one of them?
We need Spearmen, actually. You might go with the Hybrid Build... you can probably find it on Sleepywood.net
what do u mean by "we need spearmen" and i really dont want to go with a hybrid build as I wont be able to max all the skills I want to have...
We need spearmen as in we need Hyper Body for parties...

And Hybrid aren't usually good, just pick a spear/pole arm.
oh ok, ya thats y i wanted to be spearman cuz my brother is a cleric and i could really help him with hyper body.... and ya i dont think i will go hybrid
Pfff, who needs more Spearmen when you got me XD! We actually need more Pages for Scania, but yeah, spearmen are good (but extremely hard to level >_>Wink. And if you do go spearman, I recomend Hybrid if you ever plan on getting to 3rd job Wink
Polearm is better for 2nd job, and spear for 3rd. This is because polearms do more damage when slashing, and the 2nd job attack slashes more, and it attacks faster. However, one of the 3rd job attacks is a stab attack, so people use spears 3rd job, since they do more damage when stabbing.
Please don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about.

The reason people go hybrid is because one 3rd job attack (buster) always stabs, and another (thrasher?) always slashes. Buster attacks up to 3 monsters 3 times with a 170% multiplier each time when maxed. Thrasher attacks up to 6 monsters once with a 250% multiplier when maxed.

Spears do more damage with stabs. Polearms do more damage with slashes. Therefore, to maximize the effectiveness of your 3rd job skills, you should go hybrid. The only thing you'll miss out on is final attack for one or both weapon classes (depending on which hybrid build you use). BUT you won't need final attack in 3rd job because buster and thresher don't trigger it. Once you have buster and thresher, you won't need power strike or slash blast.

Final attack is only good for helping you level in 2nd job. It's useless in 3rd job. Leveling in 2nd job without final attack can be painful, which is why the 1.5 hybrid build exists.

Oh, and the attacks you'll be using in 2nd job slash more than they stab supposedly, so polearm is better
so would u recommend going hybrid? because this is all very confusing for me...

Actually, on hidden street, for dragon knight, there are 4 attacks that deal with pole arms/ spears. One is buster which attacks 3 opponents 3 times with 170% when maxed. This attacks has 2 choices pole arm or spear. The next one is Dragon rage which attacks 6 monsters with 250% damage. This one also has a pole arm/ spear choice. Im not real sure why spears are better in 3rd job, but i know that pole arms are better in 2nd job.

Both Busters force a stabbing motion for your weapon, regardless of whether it is the Spear Buster or Pole Arm Buster, so Buster is more powerful when used with a spear. Both Thrashers (or aka Fury) force a swinging motion for your weapon, so Thrasher is more powerful when used with a pole arm.

Spears are better in the 3rd job because, most of the time, Buster will average more damage and kill faster. Only in a few certain situations or maps will Thrasher be better to use.
