I'd explain it with the fact that I'm an introvert with an obsession with knowing, often leading me to refresh the forums alot more often than alot of peope would on any given day.
How does the increasing of one's time on IDB work? Can I just leave the window open all night and it will continue to increase?

*lol*, If it worked that way, I'd have well over a month of online time.
The way I understand it, the requirement for time to be logged as "time on line" is the same as the requirement to be "online" according to the who's online feature: You have to have dome something which involves a page loading in the last 15 minutes. So if you leave a window open, it only counts for 15 minutes after you leave.
