I stopped playing Neopets for about 9 months. After I came back, I found that the price of the Secret Laboratory Maps changed a lot. It used to be that 8 maps were about 50K and one map was about 56K. Now some other map is about 80K, 3 maps are still 50K and the rest are in between. Does anyone know why? It doesn't seem that the law of supply and demand would account for it.
More people are getting the lab ray and not enough random events are happening to increase the number of maps in the world. Thus, the price raises.

Becouse back then there wern't as many colers that were rare and more people began to join,colers soon began to become much rarer and it was to easy to get a good level pet with a nice c0oler and stats so the staff made the maps more difficult to obtain so the ones who didn't already have a peice had to start getin more pieces and again more people so they rose it again.(Note:This is what I think...)Plus there wern't many games back then that game good amount of Neopoints,so thats why it was also cheap....
I think Fist has it roughly right...sort of. As time passes, prices flucuate due to standard market effects on supply and demand, sudden massive price explosions (recent case in point: Zafara Double Agent Plushie jumped from ~50k to ~1.6mil in a matter of hours), and symbiotic effects.
For the lab map, remember that you need to have completed it to take advantage of the petpet lab. So, that would increase the price of the Secret Lab somewhat.
Actually, I think that many people are valuing the lab more now as well. I think that TNT is distriuting a fair amount of lab map pieces, but maybe not quite enough as the consumption of lab maps. And also, almost everything on neo is/was inflating, so why shouldn't these?
Not really my area, but I think that the inclusion of the "Secret Petpet Laboratory" map pieces as random events probably took away the frequency of Secret Laboratory Ray random events. I notice I get about three of the petpet one for each traditional lab ray map piece these days.
I think it raises for the demand of the maps, I bought my set with 478k, I suppose that the price is for the effort of searching some of them...
Due that price, the petpet lab is very cheap for the things that it does...
Edit: Adding a commentary for the frequency of Random event with petpet, I almost found all the petpet lab for free, exept for 2 pieces. And for the normal lab, only have found 2 pieces in all my playtime
SO should I buy a set now or wait for the price to drop?
Not sure. If you have the nps with you, you might as well go for it, as I don't think the prices are going to drop too much. But that's just what I think.
