I finished watching Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi last night.
There are so many geek pop-culture references and parodies, including RPG's, fighting games, Star Trek, Star Wars, mecha anime, film noir, anime in general, DragonBallZ (including making fun of DBZ's tendency to make fights last a reallly long time), and a slew of popular American movies and tv shows.
Unfortunately, about halfway through, it mostly stops the hilarity and turns a lot more serious. If it had stuck with what it was good at, it would quite possibly be the best anime ever. However, it's still overall the funniest anime I've ever seen and is definitely worth watching, especially if you know of any of the things in the list above. (13 episodes)
Basically, two 12-year-olds get transported to alternate realities of their shopping-place-town-thing. Each one has a theme. The first is an RPG, the second sci-fi, etc. In each one, they eventually are able to find something that is supposed to take them back to the real world, only to reach another alternate reality.
