I'll bet every class has them. So... what is your opinion on them? Do you like them?* Or do you hate them?
* note: Like them DOES NOT mean like to bully them
"Geeks" as a whole are too stereotyped. Like movies and TV shows etc show them as those kids that wear button-up collar shirts tucked in, with pocket protectors, bow tie, thick glasses, slicked hair, etc., but in reality, few of those people really exist.
For example, I'd consider myself a geek pretty much. I don't look like the "stereotypical" geek. I just consider myself to be smart and I learn things easily.
So that makes me indifferent. If somebody's a jerk, I wouldn't like them. Being a geek doesn't have anything to do with it.
Once I learn that "Geek", is a friendly way or a mix between the words "Freak" and "Nerd", there is a lots of "types" of geeks as i understand...
so, Why to hate them if you could be one of them?
Yes, i am geek
You're all so optimistic about geeks... so why DO I get bullied for being a geek? I don't understand...
The term "geek" is vague. I usually judge people on their personality and how they act. And by "act" I mean are you a jerk face or are you nice?
I'm not really sure of your age or anything, and I don't mean offense by this. But most people in here have optimistic views because they have matured a little bittle and have more of an open mind. But I dont' really know your situation. Just try to avoid those bullies if you can, or tell your parents or something.
People always associate being a "geek" as a bad thing and some kind of social outcast... it's not.
Truthfully, those scenes of bullies blatantly going around schoolyards picking up kids and dumping them in trash cans just isn't real.
Yes, I'm a "geek"; I easily understand concepts in my classes and get the top score on tests with just a bit of effort. I don't get pushed around by bullies. I make friends with people easily, and have respect from my peers.
What you believe of term "geek" is how you will be seen by others. If you be more open, accept facts, have some optimism, then no one will think of your as a geek.
No offense here either, but bully is also a stereotypical term. They're people too; if you act kind to them and stay open, who will bother you? One does not confront you with absolutely no reason and cause abuse. Perhaps you did something subtle which you did not notice... Don't act arrogant to others as if you're good at everything, don't be cold or harsh when you speak, and try in all ways to be friendly. =)
And if nothing else works, you won't be shunned for consulting your parents, your teachers, your peers, etc.
And if you want some philosophy, how your life goes is based on how you view it. One can believe everything is bad, but one can also believe everything to be good. It's your choice. ;D
(Oh and don't forget that a person is an infinitesimal spec on the universal clock; everything you do is truly pointless, no matter how grandeur).
Whoops, I went off on a tangent.
Well, it's not I offend anyone. I just like to keep to myself, study like crazy, and people think I'm a geek. Not my fault I was born to be antisocial.
I'll assume you're in high school or college? I don't really know of anyone in elementary or middle school who "study like crazy." But I could be wrong. I'll also assume you're not in college... because in college everybody keeps to themselves and studies like crazy.
Don't let people get to you. There's nothing wrong with working hard in school. But there's also nothing wrong with having fun once in awhile. I was really really antisocial when I was in high school and I emerged from my shell. Just do what you like to do and don't let other bug you about it.
thanks, I'll try to keep that in mind, but it's really hard to communicate with others.
Is it more of a communication problem or people just being jerks?
Well, if you have someone you can talk to - hopefully a friend, or even a best friend would be better. Have yourself introduced to other people. What I did to break out of my shell was to go out more. I think until my freshman year in college I only went out about twice a month. And then after that until now I go about 5 times a week. I have plenty of people to hang out with, and I'm THIS close to having a significant other :P Don't get me wrong - I am EXTREMELY shy. And those people "I can hang out with".. I normally don't. I stick to my unofficial GF and my best friend whenever I go out. Anyways, once I get to know someone (can take a few days to a few months) I just become extremely laidback. It took me about a full year to act like myself to my current best friend. Just take sometime and open yourself up to someone.
You could try taking a speech class... and I know what you might be thinking. Ugh speech - the thing I hate most. I thought that too. I took speech (debate and forensics) in high school all 4 years... and although I still am shy, I have a lot more to talk about when I'm in a conversation.
But if this about a bully, or someone who's just a jerk. Just find out what makes this person stay away, or be nice to you. In grade school there was a bully who'd pick on everyone for really no reason. He was just a jerk. I just pretended to be his friend and made jokes and he stayed away from me.
Anyways, I don't even know if I'm helping you. But I really do hope all works well.
Gah. Basically my whole class is stereotyped by the rest of the year level as geeks. Just because we're an accelerated class. Of course, there will be some people in my class who are more "geeky" than others but seriously, everyone gives us so much :cursing: for no reason. Just because we crammed 4 years of French into 2, 4 years of Latin into 2, 4 years of Maths into 2, etc doesn't make us geeks. I mean, we've got the most sporty class in the whole year level (generally speaking). No one in my class wears thick glasses (well, this one guy has a pair, but wears contacts, and parties like every night).
It's just really stupid. I was waiting for my tennis lesson, and these two... no won't call them that... girls walked passed me saying, "look there, she's one of the taskies" and burst out laughing. (taskies = task force = acceleration progam)
As for studying like crazy, thats basically what my life is comprised of =)
